Meet the Cleveland District Co-Directors Joann Predina & Helen Vladic
My dad managed a vegetable garden, a grape arbor, cold frames, and compost pile at our home. Our beautiful privet and rose bushes, peonies, pussy willow, lilac and mock orange were supplemented with red geraniums, always red geraniums. I moved those same family peonies and a floribunda rose to my landscape; they warm my heart every year. Coincidently, my garden club’s flower is the red geranium. Roses and violets are my favorites, and I never turn away a fresh zucchini.
During pharmacy school at Ohio State, I took classes focused on pharmacognosy- the study of medicinal drugs obtained from natural sources. I practiced pharmacy for 15 years, then 27 years as a State of Ohio Pharmacy Board Compliance Specialist. I retired two weeks before Covid hit the USA.
Holding GCO board positions since 2009, I now serve Seven Hills Garden Club, GCO, CAR and soon Ohio Judges Council. I am a Master Flower Show Judge, and will help you with flower or horticulture shows. Aggie, Betty, Deanna, Gail, Shirley, Barb O & S, and remembering Margaret and Marian, thank you for leading me in directions I could not imagine for almost 20 years.
Garden Club of Ohio members are an amalgam of super smarts, energy, and big hearts. I encourage you to ask any club member their “story”- be prepared to be amazed. I am looking forward to learning more about you and your clubs, and continuing to be amazed.
For over 15 yrs., I have been a member of the Highland Heights Garden Club, and also served as President for several terms. I was introduced to gardening at an early age. My family had a home vegetable garden and Mom started us kids planting veggie seeds when we were very young, and I was hooked! Presently, I am the Horticulture Book Review Chairman for the “Garden Greetings” publication. I retired from GE in 2008 and started volunteering at the Euclid Animal Shelter where I continue to support their causes. I am currently living with 5 dogs, 2 birds and a turtle! Life is GOOD✨.
